Types of Degree Programmes Offered in NITs

NITs are the most prominent engineering colleges in India after the IITs. They offer various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and admission to most of the programmes is entrance based. The most popular undergraduate programmes offered by NITs are BTech and B.Arch while MBA and MTech are the popular postgraduate programmes.

Most Popular NIT Courses

NITs across India offer traditional engineering programmes such as BTech and MTech. Besides, NITs also offer 5-year dual degree programmes in various fields. There are three NITs in India, NIT Trichy, NIT Allahabad and NIT Rourkela that also offer MBA or BBA. Few NITs also provide 5=year BArch and 4-year BSc degrees. Here is a list of popular BTech programmes offered at NITs:

  • Civil Engineering

  • Chemical Engineering

  • Computer Science & Engineering

  • Electrical & Electronics Engineering

  • Electronics & Communication Engineering

  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Metallurgical Engineering

  • Production Engineering

Entrance Exams for Admission to NITs

For admission in NITs, candidates have to qualify the entrance tests for various UG and PG level programmes. For BTech courses, candidates are admitted through JEE Main exam. National Testing Agency (NTA) has taken over as conducting authority for JEE Main since 2018. The NIT colleges offer postgraduate programmes with different specialisations. The popular entrance exams accepted for admission to various academic courses offered by NITs are tabulated below:

Courses Entrance Exams
BTech/BArch JEE Main
Mtech/MSc GATE
MBA CAT Exam
MCA NIMCET

NIT Cutoff for BTech Admission

JoSAA releases releasing category-wise and round-wise opening and closing cutoffs/ranks for admission to B.Tech, M.Tech and dual degree programmes in NITs. Candidates have to register and participate in the JoSAA counselling cum seat allotment process. JoSAA conducts joint counselling sessions for candidates qualifying JEE Main and JEE Advanced exam.

JEE Main Cut off depends on several factors including the number of candidates appearing in the entrance exam, total candidates applied for admission in NITs, total seat intake and difficulty level of the examination. Take a look at JEE Main cut offs for top NITs below.

NIT Cut off
National Institute of Technology Delhi National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli
National Institute of Technology Durgapur National Institute of Technology Warangal
National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad (U.P.)
National Institute of Technology Patna Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal (MP)
National Institute of Technology Rourkela National Institute of Technology, Calicut (Kerela)
National Institute of Technology Surathkal Malviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur (Rajasthan)
National Institute of Technology Nagpur Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat (Gujarat)

There are no eligibility criteria in JEE Main for assigning All India Ranks. However, candidates seeking admission to NITs must secure at least 75 per cent or be in the top 20 percentile in the 10 2 board examination or any equivalent examination conducted by any recognized board. The minimum percentage in the qualifying exam is relaxed to 65 per cent for candidates from SC/ST category.

  • NIT Trichy - Ranked 10 (score - 61.62)

  • NIT Rourkela - Ranked 16 (score - 57.75)

  • NIT Surathkal - Ranked 21 (score - 55.25)

  • NIT Warangal - Ranked 26 (score - 53.21)

  • NIT Calicut - Ranked 28 (score - 52.69)

However, while choosing colleges for JoSAA, be aware that the higher the ranking of an institute, the higher will be the cut off marks. Sometimes, the college-branch combination plays a more significant role in higher ROI from engineering education than simply the brand value of an institution.

However, as per the eligibility criteria specified by NTA, a candidate must secure a minimum 75 per cent aggregate score in the class 12 board examination or be among the top 20 percentile in 10 2 or any equivalent examination for admission to BE/BTech/BArch/BPlanning courses at NITs and other institutes of national importance such as IITs/IIITs and CFTIs.

Candidates from SC/ST categories require a minimum of 65 per cent in class 12 board or any other equivalent examination by a recognized board, as per the relaxation norms for reserved category candidates.

However, the NIT fee structure includes other components such as Admission, Library, Development Fee, Students Group, Matriculation & Recognition, etc. All these components usually vary from institute to institute. Candidates from SC/ST categories and those coming from economically weaker sections of society can avail of fee waiver/remission, subject to fulfilling all the eligibility requirements, as per Government of India norms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about NITs

A. There are in total 31 NITs. All of them are categorized under autonomous public institutions for higher education in India. Out of the 31 NITs, 11 are relatively newly established while the remaining 20 are old engineering institutes.

Although all the NITs are equally impressive in terms of infrastructure and faculty, some of the older NITs have built their reputation over a long period of time. This also reflects in the MHRD-NIRF and other rankings.

Admission to BTech programmes in NITs is completely based on qualifying JEE Main. There are no minimum marks criteria for allocation of All India Ranks (AIRs) in JEE Main Exam.

MHRD is responsible for setting down the fee structure of NITs as per their consultation with the council, the regulatory body for all NITs. The tuition fee is Rs. 62,500 per annum.

There are in total 31 NITs. All of them are categorized under autonomous public institutions for higher education in India.

As per the NIRF ranking 2022, NIT Trichy is the top NIT in India.

Both IITs and NITs are extremely good at providing education but at the same time, IITs have an edge because of their high standard of studies.

Last year, NIT Trichy was the most sought after NIT for Computer Science & Engineering among top scorers.

In 2003, the Seventeen erstwhile Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) were rechristened as National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and taken over as fully funded institutes of the Central Government and granted deemed university status.

As far as cutoffs of NITs are concerned, if you want admission to the top 10 NITs, then your rank should be less than 20,000 in JEE Main.
